Several times I traveled in Air Deccan flights. Recently, I read in some newspaper article that G.R.Gopinath, a retired captain from Indian Army is the Co-founder of Air-Deccan. Captain G.R. Gopinath (Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar Gopinath), is also author of the book “Simply fly”.
Born in a middle class family, educated from mediocre village schools and then military schools, joined Indian Army. His bio-data goes like that. After retirement, rather than selecting a peaceful retirement life, he selected a rather difficult path of forming the foundation of the idea of “low cost airlines”. His ideas are ecologically amenable and he visualized the development of the country through his innovative ideas. He also established a economically viable sericulture farm. Even though, Air Deccan later merged with Kingfisher Co., Captain G.R.Gopinath would be known for his contributions in aviation sectors, especially a low cost airlines in a country wherein domestic flight journey was not amenable to middle class family.
French Govt. has conferred Captain G.R. Gopinath by knighted with “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur” the highest civilian award conferred by the French Government.
